Who's Your Sugar Daddy?

From the people that brought you the Tootsie Roll comes another great candy classic called Sugar Daddy - "Of all the pop family, this is the Papa."
Invented by Robert Welch of the James O. Welch Company in 1925, it was originally called the Papa Sucker. The name changed to Sugar Daddy around 1932 which was a popular expression at the time, suggesting an abundance of sweetness.
It wasn't long before Sugar Daddy met Sugar Mama and had Sugar Baby. Although Sugar Mama was discontinued in the 80's, Sugar Daddy and Baby are still available to this day.
The James O. Welch Company was purchased by the National Biscuit Company (Nabisco, now Mondelēz International) in 1963. The Welch brands were then sold to Warner-Lambert in 1988, and then Tootsie Roll Industries acquired them in 1993. The Tootsie Roll Industries now makes Sugar Daddy candies!
Did you know?
Some of you seasoned candy veterans may remember the giant Sugar Daddies made as a promotion for the Billie Jean King - Bobby Riggs tennis match. They weighed a pound each and over 1900 calories! The makers of Sugar Daddies sponsored the tennis match billed as the "Battle of the Sexes" on Sept. 20, 1973.
